Agni or the Digestive Fire burns continuously in the mind and body of a human being. It helps kindle the biological processes of life. Most importantly, it promotes and controls the process of digestion in the body. The major issues of the body including the appearance, body temperature, awareness, intelligence and our overall health depend on Agni. It is responsible for the breakdown of food substances in the stomach and the neutralization of toxins.

Agni has thirteen forms in all of which the most important is the Jatharagni, which regulates and at the same time contributes to the other Agnis.
The major function of the aforementioned Agni is to burn and cook the ingested food and separate the nutrients from the waste.

Depending on how they manifest in a human body, the Agnis can be classified into four major categories which are as follows.
Tiksnagni (sharp)
It suggests powerful digestion, circulation and immunity.

Mandagni (mild)
It implies slower digestion, low appetite, desire for sweet foods and a tendency to carry excess body weight.

Visamagni (irregular)
It refers to irregular appetite including intense periods of hunger or lack of interest in food.

Samagni (regular, balanced)
It suggests balance, intake adequate amounts/ types of food, exercise and appropriate rest.

According to the Ayurvedic texts, Agni is interrupted due to inappropriate eating, undereating, overeating, having devitalized foods, excessive sleep, anger etc. Taking of excess fluids and irregularity in the dietary habits can also lead to disruption of Agni.
