Covai:
The City is situated on the banks of the river Noyyal. Coimbatore existed even prior to the 2nd Century AD as a small tribal village capital called Kongunad until it was brought
under chola control in the 2nd and 3rd Century AD by Karikalan, the first of the early cholas. The other great rulers of this city were the Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Pandyas, Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara Kings. The small Village was also named as "Covanputhur" after the leader of this group, whose name was "Covan. According to the "Cholan Poorva Pattayam" in the Madras Oriental Manuscript Library this Covan puthur later changed as Coimbatore. When Kongunad fell to the British along with the rest of the state, it's name was changed to
Sree Ayyappa Temple:
The Ayappan temple is one of the temples in coimbatore,located in Sree Ayyappan Road, Sidhapudur of Coimbatore. Records say that the Ayyappan temple was constructed during the year 1976. Also, the temple was built by a trust named Sri Dharma Sastha Baktha Jana Sabha. Actually, the Sri Dharma Sastha Baktha Jana Sabha desired to construct an Ayyappan temple in the Coimbatore
city, which is quite akin to the Ayyappan temple in Sabarimala.
Sri Jayamangala Anjaneyar Thirukoil:
Lord Anjaneyar' statue one of the temples in coimbatore was built by 'Vyasa Raya' during Krishna Deva Raya's rule. The uniqueness of this statue is that it was carved from a single monolithic rock called Suyambu and it has a distinct posture. On the right of 'Lord Anjaneyar' is 'Lord Vinayaka' and 'Nandi', also carved on the same rock. On the pivot side of 'Lord Vinayaga' are carvings of Kamadenu shedding milk on 'Lingam'. According to the epic, 'Lord Rama' requested 'Lord Anjaneya' to get a 'Lingam' to do pooja. On 'Lord Anjaneya' not returning for a long time, 'Lord Rama' made a 'Suyambu Lingeswarar'
Arulmigu Chokkalingeswara Alayam:
Arulmigu Chokkalingeswarar Alayam is an ancient and special Siva Temple in coimbatore temple tour situated at Perianaickenpalayam, on the Coimbatore - Mettupalayam Main Road, 20 kms away from Coimbatore Railway Junction. Normally in most of the Siva Temples in Tamilnadu, the Sanctum Sanctorum faces east; but here the main deity, Lord Chokkalingeswarar is facing west, which is a unique feature. Another special feature of this temple is that all the deities are with their consorts. During the seventies the temple was totally in a dilapidated condition. In order to renovate and for day-to-day maintanance and poojas, a Society was formed under the name and style of "Perianaickenpalayam Thiruvarul Thavaneri Manram".
Masaniamman temple:
This temple one of the temple around coimbatore is located in Anamalai on the Pollachi - Topslip Road, about 65 kms from Coimbatore. Maha Kumbabhishekam was performed on November 9, 2000. When 'Naanan' was the ruler of Anamalai, he had a favourite mango tree in his farm on the banks of Aaliyar river. No one was permitted to access the tree and its produces. Once when a group of girls were taking bath in the river, they saw a mango from Nanans tree floating. One of the girls picked it up and ate it, inspite of her father warning her not to do so. Enraged by this, the king sentenced her to death. Later, the inmates of the village made an idol in lying state in remembrance of the innocent girl and started worshipping her. In due course she was worshipped as 'Maasani'. When 'Kozhinkhosargal' defeated king 'Naanan', he felled that particular mango tree. It is believed that Lord Rama, when in forest, stopped by to meditate here, which added glory to this temple.
Koniamman Temple:
The Koniamman temple is another note worthy ancient temple in Coimbatore. In coimbatore temple tour,The history of the temple and deity dates back to 13th Century A.C.The temple situated in the heart of the city, is built by a leader of a small cult known as "IRULAS" 600 years ago. The small village was also named as "Covanputhur" after the leader of this group, whose name was "Covan". This Covanputhur later on changed as Coimbatore. This ancient temple was situated in the north of Coimbatore near Sanganur stream. Later when there was a fear of "Chera" invasion the "illangosar" tribe which was ruling at that time, built a new fort and to guard this fort, they built a temple and named the predominent deity as Koniamman. After this tribes ruling came to an end, the temple also had a sluggish period. Realising the importance of this temple, during the Mysore dynasty one of its kings renovated the temple and consecrated the Devi Koniamman in the style of "Mahisasuramardhini"
Dhyanalinga Temple:
The Dhyanalinga Multi-Religious Temple situated at Vellingiri foothills about 30 kms from Coimbatore is very much a part of this glorious tradition. Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, a realized Master, Mystic and Yogi consecrated Dhyanalingam, after three years of intense process of prana prathista. Measuring 13’9”, Dhyanalingam is the largest mercury based live Linga in the world. It does not require any pooja or worship, just sitting silently for few minutes within the sphere of Dhyanalinga is enough to make even those unaware of meditation to experience a state of deep meditation and feel the Divine energy that overflows from this glorious form. The free spanning dome that enshrines the Dhyanalingam measures 77’ in diameter and is the largest of its kind in the world. This divine instrument radiates seven different qualities on seven different days of the week by which one can derive various benefits.
Perur Patteeswararswamy Temple:
Patteeswarar temple one of the temple around coimbatore is situated 7 Kms west of Coimbatore near river Noyyal, on the Siruvani main road. Perur temple is one of the best known Shivastalams of the Kongu region. It was built by the King Karikala Cholan over 1500 years ago. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva also known as Patheeswarar. The sculptures in the hall, Kanagasabai are exquisite.The famous Kanaka Sabhai was built by Alagadri Nayak of Madurai in the 17th century. Tippu Sultan of Mysore attached half of the Inams of the temple in the 18th century. Later on, the East India Company restored it to the temple. The Swami and Amman Temples were renovated in the Middle of the 18th century and later on the Mantap of 63 Saints was built. In the 20th century, the Kalyana Mantapam and the front Mantapam were built and the tower was repaired. There are shrines to the presiding deity Patteeswarar and his consort Pachainayaki and some elegantly carved sculptures in the Kanagasabai hall. A gold plated statue of Nataraja giving blessings to two sagas- Gowmuni and Pattimuni adorns hall. The tank is a fine piece of symmetrical steps with 16 angles. The Cars have fine wooden carvings which attract the cupidity of even foreigners. Even the small shrines surrounding the main temple are very ancient inscriptions of high value. The roof of the temple has a series of stone chains that give a different character to the temple. Besides of these temple also has ten pillars that have magnificent carvings of the various manifestations of Shiva.The magnificent Pattivinayakar temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha.According to the Sthalapuranam, when the calf of Kamadhenu was playing in the Arasu trees forest, its legs hit a hard object which secreted blood. Later, it was discovered to be sacred 'Siva Lingam'. This led a temple to be built here. This is also called Mel Chidambaram. Saints 'Appar' and 'Sundarar' sung of this sthalam in 'Devaram'.
Arulmigu Eachanari Vinayagar Thirukoil:
This temple is located on Pollachi road, 10 kms from Coimbatore. The kumbabishekam was performed in 1990. The temple was built in 1500 A.D. The sthalapuranam states that this diety was taken to be installed at Perur Patteshwarar temple from Madurai. On its way, at Eachanari, the programme had to be terminated and the place got blessed by installing the diety here.The deity stands 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide.
Arulmigu SubramaniaSwamy Thirukoil:
This temple is located at Marudamalai, 9 kms North - West of Coimbatore. The kumbabishekam was performed in 1997.
According to epic, a saint prayed to God sitting under a marudha tree for helping him quench his thirst and tiredness. Soon he noticed water springing from beneath the tree. Overwhelmed, he pronounced 'Lord Muruga' as as the Lord of Marudhajalapathi. In due course it became 'Marudamalai'. 'Pambati Sitthar Cave' is located on the slope to the south-east of the temple. It is believed that a snake charmer who became a saint attained salvation by meditating 'Lord Muruga' in this this cave. A notable feature is that there is an image of a snake on the rock which was formed of its own accord and not carved. Two springs 'Marudha Thirtam' and 'Pambatti Sunai' are on the hills. A dip in them cures a number of diseases because of their medicinal properties.
Arulmigu Valaithottam Ayyan Thirukoil - Ayyanpalayam:
Valaithotta Ayyan is referred by the name of Sri Chinnaiyan who was cultivating bananas in his farm at Kalipalayam near Ayyanpalayam. Sri Chinnaiyan was a great devotee of Siva from his childhood and reached Vaikundam with the help of Nandhi Devar. One night Chinnaiyan appeared in the dream of his farm men and directed him to Noyal river side where Suyambu Linga and Nandhi statue was hidden and asked him to shift the same to his farm and build a temple there. Now the temple is 146 years old.
It is believed that many diseases like Chicken pox, Small pox and even snake bites are
cured here.
Arulmigu Sri Venkatesa Perumal Thirukoil (Melathiruppathi) - Mondipalayam:
This temple is counted among the noted vishnu temples of Kongunadu. The Image of the lord is flat on the four sides and conical in the center. The form was first discovered by one Kondamanaicker a few hundred years ago (we are given to understand). The devotee once sited his cow shedding it's milk on a sandhill. Induced by curiosity, he dug it, when manifested the image with Conch (Sanguchakkram) and Disc (Chakkram) as well as Saligram and Chikandi (weapon). Inspired by the divine revolution he ordered a temple to be built up for Shree Venketachalapathi enshrining the form. Devotee's who have taken vows to make offering to the lord of the seven hills can fulfil them in Mondipalayam, in the event of their inability to go to thirupathi.
The Sharadambal Temple:
The Sharadambal temple in Coimbatore was built in 1979 by the then Peedathipathi of Sharada Matt of Shringeri. The temple enshrines Goddess Sharadhambal. It is believed that the Goddess is very powerful and she grants the wishes of her devotees. The temple has small shrines for Lord Ganesha, Lord Muruga and Guru Adi Shankarar. Navarathri is the main festival that is celebrated with pomp and grandeur. All nine days the temple hosts 'kolu' and conducts special poojas and celebrations like Bhajans and dances. The temple has a Kalyana Mandapam and the Trust that maintains the temple is planning to start a Veda Pada Salai to teach Vedas and Upanishads in Sanskrit.
