Tour to Coonoor Tamil Nadu - 19 km from Ooty, Coonoor is a much popular hill station in Tamil Nadu. It is situated in the Nilgiris at an altitude of 1,858 m above sea level. Essentially a tea garden, the hill station is pleasantly cool all the year round. The hill town has been segregated into Upper and Lower Trip to Coonoor.

Surrounded by the tea plantations, and at an altitude of 1850 m, Coonoor is the first of the three Nilgiri hill station-Udhagamandalam (Ooty ), Kotagiri and Coonoor - that you come to when leaving behind the southern plains. Like Ooty, it's on the toy train line from Mettupalayam.

While Kotagiri had the Kotas, and Ooty the Todas, so Coonoor was home to the Coon hill tribe. ( The suffix, 'oor', means village. ) This now bustling town appears rather squashed between the hills and it's only after climbing up out of the busy market area with the bus and train terminals that you'll get a sense of what hill stations were originally all about. For this reason, too, most of the better accommodation is in Upper Coonoor.

» Sim's Park : Covering an area of 12 hectares, the park is major draw for tourists in Coonoor. The park shelters a collection of over 1000 plant species including magnolia, camellia, pines and tree ferns. The Annual Fruit and Vegetable Show attracts a good number of tourists in Visit to Coonoor and Tourist Attractions in Coonoor.

WCA Guest House  in Upper Coonoor is the best budget option but it's often full- phone in advance. Open to men and women, it's a handsome old colonial house with two wooden terraces and views over Coonoor. Large clean singles and doubles rooms are available here. There's hot water and basic food is available. To get there, take a town bus to 'Bedford' from where it is a five minute walk.

Vivek Tourist Home  nearby, is a reasonable place. There are deluxe rooms available.

Blue Hills at Mount Road, has a good non-veg restaurants, you may get rooms there.

Taj Garden Retreat on the hill top is an excellent hotel with a beautiful garden and a fine restaurants. The rooms are in cottages. 

» The Pasteur Institute : Set up in 1907, the Pasteur Institute is positioned close to the Sim's Park. The institute carries research work for vaccines of rabies and polio. One can take a guided tour of the institute on Saturdays in Visit to Coonoor and Tourist Attractions in Coonoor.

» Pomological Station : The institute performs various research work on persimmon, pomegranate and apricot. It is maintained by the State Agricultural Department.

» Lamb's Rock : The vantage point lies at a distance of 6 km from the hill station of Coonoor. From here you can feast your eyes on the stunning sights of the surrounding areas including the tea and coffee plantations.


Reaching Options - Coonoor Tour
The Coimbatore Airport is at a distance of 71 km from here. Coonoor lies on the toy train track between Mettupalayam and Ooty. The train departs from Mettupalayam early morning and reaches Ooty by noon. The road route too is well established connecting it to the nearby cities and towns of the state.
