According to Hindu Mythology, the caves took shape by the arrows fired by
Lava and Kusha, the sons of Lord Rama, the legendary hero of the ancient
epic Ramayana. People also believe that it was here in a narrow fissure that
Lord Rama put Surpanakha, the sister of Demon King Ravana, to death in Cave
in Wayanad.

The discovery of the prehistoric Edakkal Caves in Kerala in Kerala owes its credit to Fred Fawcett, the
then-superintendent of police of the Malabar District, who while on a
hunting trip in 1890 stumbled across a neolithic celt which was recovered
from the coffee estate of Colin Mackenzie in Cave in Wayanad. A prehistory enthusiast, Fred
Fawcett went ahead to make further inquiries and what followed resulted into
the discovery of the spellbinding Edakkal Caves in Kerala. The handiwork on the walls
of the caves were later attributed to the Kurumbars, a tribal people of the
Wayanad region.
