Folk Theatrical Forms
Yakshagana and puppet theatre are two important ancient folk theatrical forms prevalent in the state. Yakshagana was previously known as Bayalata, Bhagavathara Aata or Dashavatara Aata. Moderately similar to Kathakali of Kerala, Yakshagana took its birth around 400 years ago. The Raga melodies of this folk art form has its link with an older Dravidian style of music.


Dance Forms
Ancient dynasties like the Cheras, the Gangas, the Rashtrakutas and the Chalukyas supported the dance art forms a lot. Kannadigas was performed in the court of Chera King Senguttavan. Even the Vijayanagar rulers supported and encouraged dance performers during the Dussehra Festival. Some popular ritual dance forms of the Dakshina Kannada Coastal area include Botada Kunita, Nagamandala and Demon Dance.
