Kathakali DancerKathakali Traditional Dance - Kathakali, the oldest and classical dance in Kerala, presents a spectacular combination of literature, drama, Kathakali Traditional Dance, music and ritual. Characters with painted faces and heavy costumes perform the dance which involves immense concentration, physical stamina, facial expressions, bodily movements and perfect control over the facial expressions. Literally Kathakali means "Story-Play". Its themes are religious in nature dealing with the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and the ancient scriptures known as the Puranas. The performance is text based in Sanskritised Malayalam Kathakali Traditional Dance. The most attracting aspect of Kathakali is the its large, elaborate make up and costumes.

Kathakali Classical Dance of Kerala - A Kathakali performance is a major social event that starts at dusk and go throughout the night. It is generally performed only by men and female characters are played by men in women costume. Recently women began to perform Kathakali Dance Drama.

Costume
The most distinctive characteristic of Kathakali Classical Dance of Kerala is the costume which is very elaborate, large and heavy. More appropriately it is mask than rather make up. The costumes vary according to the nature of characters. The major kinds of costume are Sathwika (the hero), Kathi (the villain), Minukku (females), and Thatti. These costume are further subdivided which Keralite audiences are well aware.

Music
Music in Kathakali Classical Dance of Kerala is used which is similar to Carnatic music but there are different instruments used. Chenda idakka shuddha and madalam are instruments which creates local flavor of music.

Today, Kathakali has transcended the regional boundary and has been acclaimed world wide. It may also be seen in theaters.
