Kerala Mohiniattam Dance, Mohiniattam Dance  is one of the oldest dance form of Kerala, exclusively performed by women and known for its very sensual themes.

The word 'Mohiniattam' is compound form of 'Mohini' and 'attam' which means 'a beautiful woman' and 'dance'.

Popularly believed that Lord Vishnu dressed in a beautiful enchantress to thwart the demons from the nectar of immortality which came after churning the ocean.

symbolizes the protection and enchantment through dance.

Mohinattam dance themes are based on love and romance with suggestive acting, subtle gestures, rhythmic footwork and lilting music. Unlike other classical dance forms, Mohinattam dance follow secular and social themes rather than religious mythology.

Costume

The Kerala  Mohiniattam dancer wears a choli and a white sari with a gold border, possibly with a border of red.

The Sari is tied in such a way that a pleated fan is formed like an apron in front of the waist.

She is also adorned with gold ornaments which produces music during the performance. She ties hairs in a bun to the side of the head and puts flowers around it

Music

Mohiniattam classical dance of kerala has maintained the flavor of Bharata Natyam and Kathakali in it.

Mohiniattam dancer in kerala is presented accompanied with classical Carnatic music and uses instruments like Shuddha, Madalam, Mridangam, Manjira, Vina, Kanjira, Surpeti, venu, Tanpura.

A dancer narrates episodes from the epics and legends through elegant steps, rhythmic movements of her arms and amazing facial expressions.
