The Periyar National Park is home to unique and diverse wildlife species. A variety of birds and animals are found here. Apart from the elephants, there are other animals which include tiger, gaur, wild pigs, sambhar, bonnet macaque, barking deer, mouse deer, squirrels, dole or Indian wild dog etc. Four species of primates are found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur And Bonnet Macaque. Periyar also happens to be the habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr.

The reptilian population boasts of monitor lizards that can be spotted basking in the sun, on the rocks along the lake shore. Visitors if lucky can also come across the magnificent sight of King cobra and python.
