Flora and india wildlife sanctury
The place is densely covered with forest areas covering about 360 sq km of
the area. The forests are tropical - a mixture of deciduous, semi-evergreen,
and evergreen 'sholas', the last occurring in the moist valleys and
characterized by the tall trees and a closed canopy. There is also the cover
of savannah grasslands. The thick vegetation of the forests provides a
perfect source of nourishment for the animals of the sanctuary.

Fauna and wildlife tours
The Periyar National Park is home to unique and diverse wildlife species. A
variety of birds and animals are found here. Apart from the elephants, there
are other animals which include tiger, gaur, wild pigs, sambhar, bonnet
macaque, barking deer, mouse deer, squirrels, dole or Indian wild dog etc.
Four species of primates are found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed
macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur And Bonnet Macaque. Periyar also
happens to be the habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr.
Avifauna and wildlife tours
The bird population comprises of darters, cormorants, kingfishers,
cormorants, ibises, gray herons, mynas, flycatchers, orioles, wood pigeons,
kingfishers, kites, ospreys, thrushes, the great Malabar Horn bill and
racket-tailed Drongoes. The reptilian population boasts of monitor lizards
that can be spotted basking in the sun, on the rocks along the lake shore.
Visitors if lucky can also come across the magnificent sight of King cobra
and python.
Sightseeing and wildlife tours
Travellers can move in motorboats on the lake and can relish the scenic
beauty of the park. One can also enjoy the sights from the watchtowers but
with the prior permission from the forest department. However, there are
tourist guides to help you to catch hold of the kaleidoscopic moments of the
park. Visitors can also know about the Mannans, a tribal group inhabiting
Periyar Tiger Reserve and can enrich themselves about their unique culture
and lifestyle.
