Tajmahal In India is situated in the city of Agra in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on the banks of river Yamuna. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Arjumand Banu Begum, popularly known as Mumtaz Mahal, the 'Chosen of the Palace'.

Arjumand Banu Begum married the third son of Jehangir, prince Khurram who loved her more than anything else in the world. In 1628, Khurram became king after a merciless battle and took the name of Shahjahan. In1631, accompanying her husband on a military expedition to the south, Mumtaz Mahal died while giving birth to their 14th child.
It is said that the emperor was crushed death and
was mourning in the palace for two years. Shah Jahan now decided to erect the most beautiful mausoleum in the world for his wife, which was her last wish.
The construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1633 on the banks of river Yamuna where 20,000 workers labored for 17 years to complete the incredible monument. Stone carvers, inlay craftsmen and workers were summoned from distant places such as Persia, Visit Taj Mahal Agra.

The architectural splendour of the tomb with its intricate carvings and beautiful inlay work, rivals that of the Taj Mahal. The mausoleum was built by Noor Jehan in the memory of her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg. The munificent structure also houses the cenotaph of her mother Asmat Begum.
