The sanctuary is covered with dense forests, open fields and waterways. The forest here, slopes into the man made lake at the bottom of the hill. This lake serves as the waterhole for the animals and they come here to drink or take a dip. The place is home to many animals including elephants, tigers, leopards, sambhar deer, wild boars, bears, wild dogs, squirrels and snakes.

» Periyar Lake - This lake lies in the area of the Periyar Sanctuary.
