Celebration
of Thrissur Pooram - One
of the most famous temple festivals in South India, the Rituals Behind
Thrissur Pooram
Festival is celebrated at Thrissur in the state of Kerala. The term
Greetings for Thrissur Pooram is a combination of Thrissur (the city of Thrissur or Trichur) and
Pooram (meeting). Belief exists that on this occasion, gods and goddesses of
the neighbouring area meet at the place. The venue of the Rituals Behind
Thrissur Pooram festivals is the Vadakkunnathan Temple, one of the oldest in Kerala. In connection with this
huge festival, this temple at Thrissur has also come to be known as the
Rituals Behind Thrissur Pooram Temple.
Greetings for Thrissur Pooram -
Sakthan Thampuran (1775 - 1790 AD), the Raja of Kochi, is said to have
introduce the festival first. The event falls in the Malayalam month of
Medam (April/ May). Lord Shiva is the presiding deity of the festival. The
celebrations and rituals are organised at the Thekkinkadi Maidan near the
Vadakkunnathan Temple. Ten deities from the neighbouring temples pay
obeisance to Lord Shiva.
The major draw for tourists is the grand procession of bedecked elephants.
Two lines of 13 caparisoned elephants each stand vis-a-vis each other. Each
elephant is provided with a ceremonial umbrella, a peacock fan carrier and a
flywhisk wielder. Instrumentalists and string players put up a musical show.
The ceremonial umbrellas move to the rhythm of the music played by the
orchestra.
A grand display of fireworks announces the end of the event. Both locals
and outsiders attend to the function in hordes. It is seen as an important
event where one can be able to soak in the cultural charm of the state of
Kerala and interact with local people.
